Made to Order is a Better, More Sustainable Way

Made to order means something special at Salt & Cerulean Studio. Just about every item you order from my website is crafted specifically for you after you place the order. There are several reasons for doing this, but the main two are that it’s a more sustainable way to operate, and it allows me much more creative flexibility.

Sustainable Business, Made to Order

Storing finished products is expensive. It requires a lot of energy, just think of the electricity, heating, and cooling bill for every “big box” store in your city! It’s a much better and more sustainable approach to use a production partner who is also concerned with the ecological impact of their operations. Because of them, I don’t need a large space dedicated to housing finished products with the hope that they’ll sell. Only after you order a print is it actually printed. The resources are much better managed this way.

Creative Flexibility

Let me be honest with you, not everything I make resonates with my customers. I’ve created some art that I thought was nice but has just never really sold. Now imagine if I’d invested in having thousands of dollars of prints, panels, stickers, and more made of that design only to have it flop. So many resources would’ve been wasted!

Having a made-to-order sustainable business means that I risk less which allows me to create more. I learned long ago that in order to make amazing art, you have to make some crap, too. It’s just not reasonable to expect to create a masterpiece or super-popular design every time.

This approach to my art business is just one part of my push to make it as sustainable as I can. You can read more about that on this page. I sometimes discuss this and other topics on my Facebook page and Instagram feed, too. If you’re a Wilmington, NC local, you can actually pick up your orders from my markets; reducing emissions and saving you money!
